The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23)
The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love
and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love
for thousands… (Exodus 34:6-7)
...is His love for us.
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast,
immovable, always abounding in the work of
the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your
labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58)
...if indeed you continue in the faith, stable
and steadfast,not shifting from the hope
of the gospel that you heard… (Colossians 1:23)
Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith,
love, steadfastness, gentleness. (1 Timothy 6:11)
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast
under trial, for when he has stood the test
he will receive the crown of life, which God
has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12)
...is what we are called to be.
We have this as a sure and steadfast
anchor of the soul, a hope that enters
into the inner place behind the curtain,
where Jesus has gone as a forerunner
on our behalf… (Hebrews 6:19-20)
...is our hope.
Words are powerful. And not just when they are placed together in a beautiful manner - but even singularly - powerfully working as they stand in isolation. Some words latch onto your heart and camp out in your mind without even asking for permission.
Steadfast is one of those words for me.
steadfast: (adj.) Firmly fixed in place. Firm in belief, determination, or adherence. Not subject to change.
It serves as a threefold reminder:
First, the steadfast love of God. Holding tightly to frail and fickle sinners like me. Enduring through the ages, without faltering or failing. Firmly establishing it’s faithful covenant.
Second, the call to steadfast faith. In providence and pain. Through trials and tears, joy and jubilee. Determined. Resolute. Fixed. The call to unshakable trust in the unchanging nature of an eternal God.
Third, our steadfast hope. An anchor in the stormy seas of life. A rock amidst the shifting sands of this world. Immovable. Eternal. Secure.
Friends, my hope is that this word would lodge itself in your soul the way it has in mine. May you be overwhelmed by God’s steadfast love as you endure in the faith - stable and steadfast, clinging to the eternal, steadfast hope that awaits you.
